Wild camping beta · built around the night

A daytime forecast is not enough for a mountain camp.

Conditions often change after walkers leave the summit. This beta forecast follows the night beginning on each selected date, normally from 18:00 to 09:00, and separates the signals that matter to a tent from the main walking forecast.

It gives one overnight explanation, then uses height bands only for conditions that genuinely change with elevation: open-ground wind and gusts, minimum temperature, time in cloud, condensation risk and the resulting score. Rainfall is one local overnight total rather than the same number repeated at every height.

01

Tent-stress wind

Mean wind and peak gusts are assessed across the overnight window, with stronger exposure treated as a genuine limiting factor.

02

Rain and wet ground

Overnight rain is kept separate from recent ground saturation, helping distinguish a dry night from an easy place to pitch.

03

Cold, cloud and condensation

Minimum temperature, cloud immersion and atmospheric moisture provide context for comfort, visibility and drying.

Current summit forecasts

Check a mountain camping forecast.

Choose a peak, select a night and open the wild-camping summary beneath that day. The exact height bands will follow the terrain and available forecast data.

Read it in context

The exact pitch still matters.

An open-hillside forecast is a consistent comparison point, not a measurement at a particular tent door. Local shelter can reduce wind, but gullies can funnel it and ridges or cols can be much harsher. Tent design, peg holding, drainage and the judgement to move or abandon a pitch remain important.

The forecast also does not determine where camping is permitted. Check access rules, local restrictions, fire risk and leave-no-trace guidance for the place you intend to visit.

Wild camping forecast questions

Before choosing a night.

What time does the wild-camping forecast cover?

It covers the night beginning on the selected forecast date, normally from 18:00 until 09:00 the following morning.

Does the forecast describe my exact pitch?

No. It is an open-hillside reference. A sheltered pitch may be calmer, while a col, ridge or exposed plateau can be substantially windier.

What does condensation risk mean?

It describes whether the forecast atmosphere favours condensation. Tent design, ventilation, occupants and the exact pitch still affect how much moisture forms inside a shelter.
